Behind the Scenes: Our Creative Process at 86th Aspect
Every project we take on at 86th Aspect follows a process we've refined over years of production work in Houston. It's not rigid — every client and project is different — but it provides the structure that ensures nothing falls through the cracks and the final product exceeds expectations.
Here's how we work, from first conversation to final delivery.
Discovery: Understanding Your Story
Every project begins with listening. Before we discuss cameras, locations, or timelines, we need to understand your brand, your audience, and the specific problem this project needs to solve. What does success look like? Who is the viewer? What should they feel, think, or do after watching?
This isn't a formality. The discovery phase shapes every creative decision that follows. A brand film for ChiCha SenChen requires a completely different approach than an Amazon product video for Guardian Fall Protection. Both are excellent work, but the strategies behind them are entirely different.
Creative Direction: Building the Vision
With a clear understanding of your goals, we develop the creative direction. This includes mood boards, reference footage, shot lists, scripting or interview questions, and location scouting. For video projects, we map out the narrative arc. For photography, we define the visual style and shot categories.
We present this direction to you for feedback before production begins. No surprises on set — you know exactly what we're going to capture and why.
Pre-Production: Planning Every Detail
Pre-production is where good projects become great ones. We coordinate locations, talent, wardrobe, equipment, schedules, and contingency plans. For Houston shoots, this means checking weather forecasts, confirming venue access, arranging parking for crew vehicles, and ensuring we have backup plans for outdoor setups.
We create a detailed production schedule that accounts for setup time, lighting changes, and breaks. Everyone on the team — and your team — knows exactly what's happening and when.
Production: Shoot Day
On set, our priority is capturing the best possible footage while keeping the experience positive and efficient. We move through the shot list methodically, staying flexible enough to capture unexpected moments that strengthen the story.
Our team runs lean by design. Fewer people on set means less disruption to your business and faster decision-making. We bring exactly the crew and gear the project requires — no more, no less.
Post-Production: Where the Story Comes Together
Editing is where raw footage becomes a finished piece. We handle color grading, sound design, music selection, motion graphics, and final assembly. Our editing process follows a structured review cycle: rough cut, revision round, fine cut, final approval.
We typically deliver the first rough cut within two weeks of the shoot. From there, revisions are collaborative — you give feedback, we refine, and we repeat until the piece is exactly right.
Delivery: Optimized for Every Platform
Final deliverables are exported in every format you need — 16:9 for web, 9:16 for social, 1:1 for feed posts, with appropriate compression for each platform. We don't just hand over a single file and wish you luck. Every deliverable is optimized for where it's going to live.
After Delivery
Our relationship doesn't end at delivery. We're available for re-edits, new cuts from existing footage, and strategic advice on how to distribute your content for maximum impact. Many of our Houston clients work with us on an ongoing basis — coming back for new projects as their brand evolves.
If you're curious about working with us, start a conversation. We'd love to hear your story.
